The word 'god' can be, and are alot of things. But it's just A word, mind you - nothing special about it at all.
'What about the man upstairs?,' will probably be your counter for that. Well, no.
He/she/it is nothing at all. That's right, nothing. Berserk have encouraged me in becoming an even greater atheist, for example, when this priest and two of the main characters are surrounded by monsters, ghouls, trolls, whatever 'god' descended his angels to protect you from - the priest actually thinks that it is what 'god' has in mind, that it was their destiny, that they oughta accept the situation, rather than defending themselves.

- Well there it is - religion from the year zero, till today. Luckily, 'gods' power doesn't have such an influence as it had back then.
Today, science is in the lead. For example, back in the year of 800, when the vikings still existed, there was an erruption in the earth's shell, and lava bursted out. Now who the fuck could possibly know what that was? I'll tell you. An old man, who was said to have witnesed very much in his life, and ought to be rather wise, came out with the statement: "It was a 'higher power,' something far superior to us that caused this, because no man can do such a thing. It can be seen as a miracle by this phenomena, and I am most certain that it actually is a 'higher power'. Maybe someone did this? Someone who had controll over this 'higher power'? Was it a God perhaps?"

It was, ofcourse, not said like this. He said something like "GOD DID IT!!!!11!112345", and why not? I mean, was there really any other explanation?
Today it is, and today it is proven, that it is called a 'volcanic erruption,' or whatever clever word you want to use.
And thus this 'god' has given believers protection, fortune, luck, or whatever is not proven. Neither is it possible. Jesus, for example, could have lied. His family could have lied about him being borned i a barn, and that his mother actually had sexual intercourse with an angel. Maybe she wasn't faithfull to Abraham, and had some fun at the side of her choirs while the Man Of The House was out of town, and didn't have any other explanation? I mean, c'mon. You could lie about everything back then.

- And angel appeared infront of me and spoke to me.
- Oh, look at that. What did he say?
- He wanted to borrow some sugar.

Ok, bad example. But you get the point.
Religion is, none the less, good. For example, it can be some kind of helping hand, or support for the weak to rely on 'god' or Jesus. When you had a hard time, you prayed for fortune for the dearest, or, you always prayed, just to be loyal to your 'god'. Back in the days, it kept people away from all the bad stuff, such as drinking, gambling, and you were taught how to live a good life. If you didn't obey, or committed a crime, 'god' would punish you. And back in the days, the priests anctually kept order. As far as I know, the Bible in Sweden has been in Latin for over half the time since that monk came and converted the rest of the vikings. What's the point in having a religion in a country where you couldn't read, or understand, the lore behind what you believe in?
